"Stevens Institute of Technology announced today that 19 new members have joined its faculty cohort for academic year 2016-17, hailing from such institutions as Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and UNC-Chapel Hill. Mehmet Kurt joins Stevens as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Bogazici University in Turkey and a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in mechanical engineering. His research interests include biomechanics, biomedical devices and structural health monitoring. Prior to joining Stevens he served as a postdoctoral scholar in the bioengineering department at Stanford University, where he researched the biomechanics of brain injury."

Prof. Mehmet Kurt is awarded the prestigious Early Career Award by Thrasher Research Foundation. The purpose of this early career program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. The award was open to all scientists and clinicians worldwide and had a success rate <10%. The award will help Prof. Kurt and his team to develop an airbag-based smart helmet to reduce the risk of concussions for bicycling in the pediatric population.
